Big Brother evicts Emily Parr

Big Brother has waded into another racism row after removing contestant Emily Parr for calling fellow housemate Charley Uchea an offensive name.

The broadcaster evicted Parr at 3.30am this morning, seven hours after she said to Uchea, in reference to her dancing style: "You pushing it out you nigger?"

The remaining housemates were informed six hours later. Despite Uchea's shock at her use of the word, Parr insisted the word was used in a light-hearted manner.

C4 moved quickly to diffuse the row in the wake of Ofcom's recent report into racial comments made during the most recent series of Celebrity Big Brother. It omitted the comment from the 'as live' streaming on E4 and reported the remark to senior production staff at Brighter Pictures, the Endemol UK subsidiary that produces the show.

After consultation with senior executives at C4, Emily was removed on the grounds that she had broken the rules governing contestant behaviour. Channel 4 has suspended this week's eviction vote, which was between Parr and Shabnam Paryani.

"I think people watching the show tonight will agree that Emily spoke carelessly rather than maliciously," said E4 head Angela Jain.

"In the wake of Celebrity Big Brother, we must consider the potential offence to viewers regardless of Emily's intentions and her housemates' response. The word nigger is clearly racially offensive and there was no justification for its use.

"We have removed Emily from the house to once again make it clear to all housemates and the viewers at home that such behaviour won't be tolerated."
