The second instalment of ITV2's The Secret Diary of a Call Girl suffered a drop of 600,000 viewers last night but still gained an impressive 1.2m viewers, a multichannel share of 7.5%.
The Billie Piper-fronted drama from Tiger Aspect held a largely steady audience over the 30 minutes it was on air from 10pm.
The opening episode in the same slot last week attracted 1.8m (11%). So far both editions have easily outstripped the channel's slot average this year of 367,000 (2.25%).
Last night's ITV2 show narrowly outperformed Five by a slender margin. The multichannel drama gained precisely 1.18 million viewers compared to the film Fire Down Below which pulled in 1.14m (9.1%) in network homes.
ITV2's multichannel rivals were well short of rivalling Secret Diary. BBC3's EastEnders at 10pm gained 597,000 (3.8%) in the same slot. Five US's film Hudson Hawk gained 328,000 (2%).
Sky One's new US teen drama Hidden Palms got off to a shaky start at 9pm with the first episode bring in just 60,000 (0.3%). The second instalment followed straight afterwards at 10pm with just 27,000 (0.2%).
BBC1's 10 O'Clock News towered over the competition with 5.7m (29.9%) watching for 35 minutes. It's nearest rival at the time was ITV1 with just 1.8m (9.5%) watching Commando: on the Front Line.
There wasn't much in it between Channel 4 and BBBC2. C4's Without a Trace had 1.4m (8.4%) while BBC2's repeat of That Mitchell and Webb Look had 1.3m (6.7%).
ITV1 struggle
ITV1 also struggled in the key 9pm slot with the second part of The Whistleblowers attracting a lowly 2.8m (13.3%) over an hour. Its audience was down by a million viewers compared with the previous week. So far this year the commercial network has averaged 3.7m (16.4%) in that hour-long slot.
Who Do You Think You Are? gained over twice the ITV1 audience at the time with 6m (28%) watching the BBC1 show.
Game for a laugh
BBC2's new look comedy line up made a steady, if uninspired start. The heavily promoted The Life and Times of Vivienne Vyle, starring Jennifer Saunders, gained 1.8m (8.6%), just under the channel's slot average of 1.9m (8.7%). At the same time C4's anthropological series Meet the Natives managed 1.6m (7.3%).
BBC2's audience slipped further at 9.30pm for the start of comedy The Peter Serafinowicz Show. The 30 minute sketch show gained 1.5m (7%), down by 100,000 on the slot average.
Five dedicated most of its peaktime line up to Everton's Uefa Cup draw against FC Metalist Kharkiv. The entire coverage between 7.30pm and 10pm averaged a strong 2m (9.4%). The audience peaked with 2.7m (12.3%) at 9.15pm.
All hours shares for Thursday 4 October 2007: BBC1 – 23.8%, ITV1 – 18.2%, C4 – 8.3%, BBC2 – 7.8%, Five – 6.7%, multichannel – 35.2%.
