Sky One's US drama series Lost was back for a fourth series at 9pm last night with a sizeable 1.1m viewers, a multichannel share of 5.03%.
The cult show held a largely stable audience over the hour but managed to hit a high of 1.2m (5.37%) halfway through. It was way above the channel's slot average for last year of 290,000 (1.46%).
In satellite homes, the show's audience equated to a sizeable share of 11.38%.
Sunday's opening episode was a big hit with both upmarket and younger viewers. Some 52.8% of the show's audience were from the ABC1 demographic while those aged between 16 and 34 made up 45.7% of the audience.
A further 106,000 viewers watched the drama using Sky's timeshifted start option.
Despite the programme airing in a more prominent slot this series – at 9pm instead of 10pm for series three – the show was down by just over 300,000 viewers on the launch of the previous run on 19 November 2006. Then the show picked up 1.4m (9.41%). Overall, the entire series managed a series average of just under one million: 996,000 (6.6%).
Lost was easily the most popular multichannel offering of the entire day. ITV2's Supernatural at 9.15pm came close to the 600,000 mark with 598,000 (2.74%) while ITV3's film Jaws had 324,000 (1.68%) from 8.45pm.
BBC4 also had some popular success with its themed shows around Sunday night television. Its new 30-minute series The Cult of Sunday at 8.35pm had 350,000 (1.47%) which was followed by The Great British Sunday on 255,000 (1.14%) from 9.05pm.
Sky One was also top of the multichannel pile earlier in the evening thanks to a double helping of new editions of The Simpsons.
The first, at 8pm, managed 835,000 (3.50%) while 665,000 (2.60%) watched the second at 8.30pm.
The return of Sky One's Weeds, for a third run couldn't maintain the pace though from 10pm. The series launched with 148,000 (0.78%) with 108,000 (0.82%) watching the second instalment at 10.35pm.
