ITV1's Bafta-winning Harry Hill's TV Burp returned strongly with 6.2m viewers (27.3% share) on Saturday, despite tough competition from Strictly Come Dancing.
The eighth series of Avalon's TV review comedy went out at 6.55pm and was up by 24% on the ITV1's slot average for the year of 5m (25.1%).
The half-hour show did well despite being up against BBC1's popular Strictly Come Dancing, which began at 6.40pm.
The corporation's celebrity talent show hogged the limelight with 8.6m (37%) between 6.40pm and 8.10pm, up by 1.2m viewers on last week.
But it still couldn't match ITV1's The X Factor, which pulled in a sizeable 9.3m (38.5%) for two hours from 7.25pm. The X Factor results show at 10.10pm picked up a strong 7.9m (39.7%).
There wasn't much between the two main terrestrial channels at 5.55pm, but ITV1 managed to snag the spoils. BBC1's Merlin gained 5m (27.1%) while Totally You've Been Framed!, on ITV1, managed 5.2m (27.4%).
BBC2 managed to attract 2.2m (9%) for its historical Timewatch documentary Young Victoria at 8.10pm, but Channel 4 struggled to hit the million mark for most of peaktime (6pm to 10.30pm). Its film Failure to Launch was its top programme, grabbing 1.1m (4.8%) with another 187,000 watching on C4+1.
Five's biggest hit of the day was CSI: Crime Scene Investigation at 9.50pm with 1.3m (6.5%).
