BBC launches on-demand iPlayer

The BBC has launched the BBC iPlayer - its on-demand television viewing programme. Internet users can now sign up to join the service, which allows them to download shows from the past seven days.

It is being rolled out through the summer, with those allowed to access it increasing until a full unlimited launch in the autumn.

Shows, once downloaded, can be viewed for up to 30 days before they delete themselves.

Corporation chiefs have hailed its arrival as a big step in broadcasting development but others have questioned it.

Arash Amel, a technology analyst for Screen Digest, said: "I have supposedly been on the trial for the last two weeks but there has just been technical fault after technical fault."
